Cataract Surgery

About Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is a straightforward procedure to restore clear vision. Over time, the natural lens in our eye can become cloudy, much like a fogged-up window. This cloudiness is what we call a cataract, and it can make seeing clearly a challenge.

The Procedure

During cataract surgery, your eye surgeon will remove this cloudy lens and replace it with a clear, artificial one, known as an intraocular lens (IOL). The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis, which means you can go home the same day.

Aftercare

After the treatment:

  • Have someone drive you home
  • Wear sunglasses if your eyes feel sensitive to light
  • Try to rest your eyes as much as possible (for at least a few hours)

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the procedure take long?

No, cataract surgery is relatively quick. The actual surgical procedure typically takes about 15 to 30 minutes per eye. However, the entire process, including preparation before the surgery and a brief period of observation afterward, may last a couple of hours. It's worth noting that if you have cataracts in both eyes, surgeries are usually scheduled on separate days to ensure safe healing and recovery.

Is the procedure painful?

Cataract surgery is generally not painful. Before the procedure begins, your eye will be numbed with local anesthetic drops, ensuring comfort throughout the operation. Some patients might feel a slight sensation of pressure or mild discomfort, but pain is rare.

Will my vision improve immediately?

After cataract surgery, many patients notice an immediate improvement in their vision. However, it's not uncommon for vision to be a bit blurry or cloudy for a few days as the eye adjusts and heals.

Is the procedure safe?

Cataract surgery is one of the most common and safest surgical procedures performed worldwide. While all surgeries have risks, the vast majority of patients experience improved vision without complications.
